Dairy Goats

Why Dairy Goats?

When we first moved back to the valley, one of our goals was to get our kids involved in FFA and 4H. Dairy goats, particularly Nigerian dwarfs, are small animals and were easy for the kids to manage. It didn’t help that they were super cute.  That is how we originally got started with Dairy goats in South Texas.

From that starting point we acquired a few more does and our own bucks, to start our own herd of dairy goats.  We even got a couple of Nubians and have started breeding Mini Nubians, probably my favorite dairy goat so far. Not as small as Nigerians and not as big as Nubians, but they carry alot of milk!

Currently the kids are on their 4th year showing their goats and kids. Next year we will have some of their friends joining them on the endevour, as they will be showing some of our Nigerian kids.

How We Manage Them

Our dairy goats are raised along side our bigger Kiko goats without much incident. They all get along pretty well for the most part, and we have not had any issues.

During the off season we keep everyone together and after kidding our dairy goats will get their own feed while being milked.

We also have to keep a closer eye on our dairy girls as they are more susceptable to parasites.
